Whiplash Q & A
What is a Whiplash?
Whiplash is a traumatic injury that occurs normally during an auto accident, or when the head and neck are violently moved from an outside stimulus. During this intense, sudden movement, the muscles and ligaments in the neck are suddenly extended beyond their normal range of motion. For example, a car accident can whip the cervical spine backward and forwards very quickly which results in this kind of overextension in the neck. This injury causes the muscles to work improperly and can often cause unwelcome pain in the head, shoulders, and neck.
Most patients believe that whiplash injuries only occur during car accidents. However, the reality is these injuries can occur in almost any form of physical activity. Sports, a simple fall, or even just a force to the back can cause whiplash. No matter what the cause is, Dr. John Gehnrich is an experienced chiropractor who can safely support your body’s natural recovery process.
What are the Symptoms of Whiplash?
Some of the common symptoms of whiplash include neck pain, headaches at the base of the skull, migraines, and pain in and around the shoulders. In addition to these symptoms, whiplash injuries can also have a cognitive impact. People suffering may have difficulty concentrating on simple tasks and may find it difficult to sleep as well.
