TMJ symptoms

At Rhino Chiropractic & Holistic Wellness Center, we provide dedicated chiropractic care for TMJ disorder, proudly serving the Rockville Centre community. Specifically, TMJ refers to a painful disorder that affects the joint(s) of the jaw, also known as the temporomandibular joints. This can make opening and closing the mouth (and thus chewing or talking) very painful and can lead to a number of other problems. Here in our office, we use tried-and-true chiropractic approaches to address your pain and help you find relief.
Common Symptoms of TMJ
The most common symptom of TMJ disorder is a pain around one or both sides of the jaw (though the pain usually centralized on one side). Furthermore, many people with TMJ report that they hear a clicking or grinding sound when they open their mouths or move their jaws in a certain way. Some may find that the pain and stiffness is at its worst upon first waking up in the morning, and the pain can be severe enough that it also leads to headaches and migraines. In serious cases, TMJ disorder can even cause pain in the ears and difficulty hearing.
Our Chiropractic Approach
We utilize a drug-free, non-invasive, chiropractic approach to TMJ disorder here in our office. Specifically, our very own D. Gehnrich utilizes an upper cervical method known as the Palmer method, which involves improving the alignment of the jaw along the atlas of the spine. This technique is also commonly paired with cold laser therapy, which involves the use of a handheld device that reduces inflammation in the jaw and helps to provide almost immediate relief from your pain. Depending on the severity of your TMJ, multiple sessions may be recommended for the best results.
